How to apply for a PhD programme

PhD Programmes attendance at the University of Bologna is conditional upon passing an examination carried out on an annual basis. The provisions governing the selection procedure are laid down in the Call for applications and its attachments.

new Call for Applications [.pdf 1403 KB] for additional PhD scholarships on 37th cycle PhD programme is now open. Applications must be submitted within October 20th, 2021, at 11:59 pm.

The additional scholarships are co-funded by FSE REACT-EU (PON “Ricerca e Innovazione” 2014 – 2020 project), on Innovation and Green topics.

How to apply

  • while the call for applications is open, visit Studenti Online and enter data required for registration. Please, note that in case of loss of the user and password, an account recovery procedure is available. In case of failure to complete the above procedure, a request for the email account recovery can be sent to the Help Desk ( A scanned copy of a valid ID document must be attached;
  • select “Admission application”, then “PhD programme” and ”Next”;
  • select the PhD programme of interest;
  • fill in the online application form and upload the documents indicated in the art. 3 of the Call for applications and the additional documents indicated in the PhD Programme Table, of each course in the PhD programmes list;
  • click on ”Submit”.

Notice: applications that have been filled in but not submitted by the deadline of the call will be rejected.

No admission fee is requested.

Do not upload certificates issued by Italian public universities, but attach self-certifications.

If the PhD Programme Table of the PhD programme of your choice requires reference letters, you can use the fac simile of reference letter [.docx 18 KB].

For international applicants

Extra-quota positions

If you’ve been awarded a scholarship funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation MAECI or by other Institutions in your Country of origin, and you’ve successfully passed the selection procedure as an eligible applicant, you shall be entitled to an extra-quota position. In order to obtain this possibility, please, submit an official document attesting your scholarship awarding.

International PhD College at the Institute of Advanced Studies

Foreign applicants residing abroad and holding a Master’s degree obtained in a foreign University, when submitting their application to a PhD Programme, can also apply for a free accommodation and the admission to the International PhD College at Institute of Advanced Studies
