Upon completion of the program, you will be eligible to take the certification examination, which is administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program

A sonographer is a health care professional who uses high-frequency sound waves as a diagnostic tool to view the human body in order to aid the physician in the diagnosis of illness. You will study the use of sound waves to generate images of various parts of the human body.

As a graduate you will have the ability to conceptualize in 3-dimensional form. The program provides classroom didactic instruction, hands-on scanning, laboratory instruction and clinical experiences in a variety of medical facilities and outpatient diagnostic centers. You will be trained to sit for the national board exams administered by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers in the specialty areas of “Abdomen,” “Obstetrics and Gynecology” and “Breast.” Successful completion of this exam results in attaining the RDMS (Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer) credential.

Grade Point Average (GPA)

TEAS for Allied Health Entrance Exam

Completion of TEAS for Allied Health Entrance Exam (formerly called the HOBET exam) or HESI A2 Exam is required to be eligible for this program.

  • Math: 67.9%
  • English: 58.5%
  • Science: 47.4%

Minimum required scores in Reading, Math, English and Science can be obtained through multiple attempts, however each attempt must have a minimum comprehensive (composite) score of 60%. If a student reaches a minimum required score in one of the four categories but does not score a 60.00% overall, the attempt will not be valid.

Exam results will be sent from the CNM Assessment Center directly to the Coordinated Program Entry Office.

If you took the TEAS for Allied Health exam at another school and wish to use that score, you must request your transcript to be sent to CNM. Log into your ATI Allied Health account and order either a TEAS for Allied Health Transcript. For HOBET transcripts call (913) 661-5592. Scores sent from another school must meet CNM criteria.

HESI A2 Exam

The HESI exam must be completed with a 75% on all six sections (Math, Grammar, Reading, Vocabulary, Biology and Chemistry), and an overall score of 75%. Learn more about the HESI exam.

Sign up for the exam online on the Workforce Training Center website:

  • Click on “Course Offerings” on the left-hand side.
  • Then look under “Testing and Assessments” on the right-hand side.
  • Click on NMNEC HESI A2 EXAM.

You are only allowed to take the test twice in any twelve month period. The second attempt must be a minimum of 45 days after the first attempt. The third attempt may be scheduled one year after the second attempt. If you retake the exam, you should sign up for a test date that says “HESI A2 EXAM RETAKE.”

Results of the exam are good for one year. Exam results will be sent from Workforce Training Center directly to the Coordinated Program Entry Office. If you took the HESI A2 exam at another school and wish to use that score, you must contact HESI directly at (800) 950-2728 and ask to have your score sent via email to cpe@cnm.edu. Scores sent from another school must meet CNM criteria.

Complete the Following Prior to Screening

  1. Enroll as a CNM student (if you are not already a CNM student). Visit the Registration & Application page.
  2. Receive CNM ID number and CNM email address. Check your email address to make sure it is functioning properly and contact Information Technology Services if you have questions.
  3. If you have attended other colleges/universities, have all transcripts sent to the CNM Records Office and allow up to four weeks for processing. When evaluation is complete, you will receive an email showing how credits were evaluated.
  4. Check your record in myCNM to make sure the courses (the minimum required courses) are shown with the EXACT course numbers. If you took a similar course that did not transfer in exactly as the CNM required course, complete an Appeal for Re-Evaluation of Arts and Science Credits Form and submit the form to the CNM Records Office. Course documentation must accompany this form as stated. If the request is approved, then the transfer coursework will appear on a your CNM transcript, which can be viewed through myCNM.
  5. Take the TEAS for Allied Health at one of CNM’s Assessment Centers. Scores are good for 5 years and will be sent automatically to the Coordinated Program Entry Office. Find more information on the TEAS for Allied Health exam. Find more information on the ATI TEAS (formerly HOBET/TEAS V Exam).

Once you complete the form, you will be notified of your form status by CNM email and it is your responsibility to check your CNM account regularly. You will be notified of the date, time, and what courses to register for in the program. If you successfully register for the program, classes will begin in the upcoming term.

Attend Compliance Orientation

If you are successfully registered for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, you must attend a Mandatory Compliance Orientation prior to starting the program. During this orientation specific information will be given regarding what is required for you to get ready for the clinical portion of this program. There are several routes to becoming a radiologic technologist in New Mexico. New Mexico licenses radiology technicians and technologists at multiple levels. A relatively short board-approved program can qualify you as a limited x-ray operator. You can get full certification by completing an accredited two year program. This gives you a much broader scope of duty. With a bachelor’s degree or post-baccalaureate degree, you can become a radiologist assistant.

If you are seeking full certification in radiography, you should enroll in a program that has been accredited by JRCERT. Other programs may be acceptable if 1) the school holds a recognized institutional level accreditation and 2) all required clinical procedures are taught. Your program director will need to sign that you have met clinical requirements before you can be certified by the ARRT. This is true whatever program you enroll in. You can turn in your ARRT application when you’re in the last three months of your program.

What is Limited Certification?

Limited certification allows you to perform basic x-rays in certain parts of the body. You will need some structured education. Depending on the certification you seek, the minimum contact hour requirement may be 220 to 250 hours. (An exception is dental x-ray; here the clock hour requirements are considerably lower.)

You will also need to do clinical training in each area where you seek certification; minimum hours may range from 160 to 480. You will take a limited scope exam which includes a core and additional modules which correspond to different parts of the body. (You will indicate on your application which areas you’ve trained in; this will ensure that you have the opportunity to take all the corresponding modules.)

Temporary Certificates for Radiologic Technologists in New Mexico

You may work under a temporary certificate while you are fulfilling your ARRT examination requirement. You must apply for the certificate within a year of graduation. It will expire a year later. The New Mexico board notes that you should apply for permanent licensing at least two months before the expiration date of your certificate.

Advanced Credentials

In order to work as a radiologist assistant, you will need to have education at at least the bachelor’s level. You will need to hold two ARRT certifications. You will be certified first as a radiographer, then as a radiologist assistant. You must also hold certification in advanced cardiac life support. You will need to provide an employment letter from a radiologist.

Certification in fusion imaging won’t necessarily require a bachelor’s degree, but you will need to take a board-approved course.

Out of State Applicants

If you’ve been working as a radiology technologist in another municipality and seek licensure without examination, you should demonstrate one of two things: 1) that you hold national certification or 2) that you hold an active credential in a state with similar standards and have practiced for at least one out of the previous three years.

Career Outlook in NM for Radiologic Technologists

The average salary for a radiology technologist in New Mexico is $55,780, according to the BLS. In Santa Fe, it is quite a bit higher: $62,150. Salaries in the Eastern non metropolitan areas average just $52,790.

Whatever your area of the state, your salary will be influenced greatly by your certification level and your experience. Jobs at specialty hospitals are demanding, and employers often look for a specialist with advanced competencies.

Fortunately, radiology technology is a growing field. In New Mexico, 18% growth has been projected for the years 2008 to 2018.

Radiologic Sciences Program

BSRS Medical Imaging – Degree Completion 

Students applying to the Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences (BSRS) Medical Imaging program should have completed or plan to complete an entry level Medical Imaging Program such as x-ray, ultrasound, or radiation therapy at an outside institution before acceptance.  

Nuclear Medicine, CT, and MRI Clinical Programs

Working in conjunction with University of New Mexico Hospital, our clinical programs prepare each student for a career of their choice in Nuclear Medicine, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), or Computed Tomography (CT).

Each clinical program involves academic course work and intensive clinical training at various medical facilties in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico. When not in the classroom, each student works under the supervision of clinical staff on a wide array of equipment and learns how to perform the various procedures associated with each type of examination.

Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Science Medical Imaging

The Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Sciences (BSRS) Medical Imaging is a degree completion program for those students who would like to finish the last two years of education and gain a bachelor’s degree.  The Medical Imaging concentration provides students with an opportunity to advance their careers and also provides a pathway to further their education.  

The program is a part-time or full-time curriculum of online didactic instruction designed to accommodate technologists who are working while finishing their bachelor’s degree

  • Eligible participants are certified radiographers, nuclear medicine technologists, radiation therapists, magnetic resonance imaging technologists or sonographers. Students must seek ARRT or ARDMS certification from an outside institution to be eligible for the Medical Imaging program. 
  • Students enrolled in an entry-level certificate program at an outside institution should seek advisement as to when to start the BSRS program.  Please contact the Radiologic Sciences Program for advisement.
