ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS – 2022 ENTRY

UCAT

The University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT) is used in the selection process by a number of UK medical schools. We believe that an admissions process based entirely on predicted A level achievements doesn’t necessarily serve your best interests as an applicant.

Our UCAT requirements are:

  • Applicants are required to take the UCAT in the year of application
  • You will need to achieve Band 1, 2 or 3 in the Situational Judgement Test part of the UCAT

Your total UCAT score will be assigned points as part of our selection procedure.

A Levels

We require AAA including Biology and Chemistry (excluding General Studies, Critical Thinking, Citizenship and Applied Science).

We value all subjects equally for your third A Level and encourage you to explore your interests within this qualification. Please note that Human Biology is not considered to be a distinct subject from Biology, and would not be counted as a third A Level.

Applicants should be predicted AAB or above to apply.

A Levels (or equivalent) should normally be completed within a two-year period of study, however, applications are welcome if you achieved at least BBB at a first sitting and are taking one additional year to achieve AAA or equivalent.

Resit applications from students who achieved below BBB at the first sitting of A Levels are not accepted.

If you are repeating a year of A Level study before sitting your exams, you are eligible to apply.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

We require 36 points overall with 665 at Higher Level, to include Biology and Chemistry.

Resit applications are welcome, provided you achieved an overall score of 31, to include at least 555 at Higher Level in your first sitting. Resit applications from students who achieved below 555 at Higher Level in their first sitting are not accepted.

GCSEs

We require 6 GCSEs at grade A*/9 – C/4 or equivalent, including English Language and Maths at Grade 6/B or above.

We accept GCSE re-sits.

English language requirements

You must have one of the following qualifications:

  • English Language: GCSE Grade B/6 or above, or AS level Grade B or above, or A Level English Language or Literature Grade B or above, or equivalent.
  • IB score of 5 (SL or HL) in English Language A or English Language-Literature A.
  • IELTS score of 7.5 with a minimum of 7.0 in every component, obtained within the last two years.
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic): Total score of 73 with a minimum of 65 in every component obtained in the last two years.
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced (formerly Cambridge Assessment of English): Score of 195 with a minimum of 190 in every component obtained in the last two years.
  • TOEFL: Total score of 105 with minimum 24 in writing, 26 in speaking and 22 in both listening and reading, obtained in the last two years.

At interview, if we have any concerns about your English language capability, regardless of your origin, country of upbringing or existing qualifications, we may require you to take an additional English Language test as a condition of any offer we make to you.

Maths requirements

We require GCSE Grade B/6 or above, or AS level Grade B or above, or Core Maths Grade B or above, or equivalent.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

If you are taking the EPQ alongside your A Levels, our offer is AAB at A Level (including Biology and Chemistry at Grade A) and A in the EPQ.

For the third A Level subject we consider all subjects equally with some exceptions, please see the A Levels information above.

You will only be eligible to this offer if you choose Hull York Medical School as your firm choice in UCAS.

This offer is not available if you are re-sitting A Levels or the EPQ.

Scottish Highers / Advanced Highers

We require AAAAB at Higher Level, plus BBB at Advanced Higher Level, to include Biology and Chemistry at Advanced Higher.

We will also accept AAAAA at Higher Level, plus AA at Advanced Higher Level, to include Biology and Chemistry at Advanced Higher, if only two subjects have been taken at Advanced Higher level.

Welsh Baccalaureate

We accept the Welsh Baccalaureate as equivalent to a third A Level, and will accept AA at A Level, to include Biology and Chemistry, plus A in the Welsh Baccalaureate.

WIDENING ACCESS

We’re committed to identifying the best possible applicants, regardless of personal circumstances or background. Therefore we offer alterative entry routes into medicine with lower entry criteria.ALTERNATIVE AND CONTEXTUAL OFFERS

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

INTERNATIONAL (INCLUDING EU) STUDENTS

We welcome applications for our five-year Medicine programme from international (including EU) students of excellent academic standing.

You must be 17 or over on 1 October in the year you enroll, and you will be asked to attend a selection interview in person.

International applicants are required to undertake the UCAT in the year of application, and to achieve a Situational Judgement Test score of Band 1, 2 or 3.

You must also meet the equivalent of the academic requirements listed above (GCSEs / A Levels / IB etc.) either through international versions of these qualifications or through your county-specific qualifications.

If you do not have GCSE equivalent qualifications, we will award an equivalent score for your application based on your school or college Middle Years Programme assessments and your UCAT score.

If you’re not sure how this relates to you or if your country does not feature in our list, please download and complete our admissions entry form for us to conduct an assessment of your academic qualifications.

Unfortunately, we cannot accept deferred applications from international students.Type your country here…

Your total UCAT score will be assigned points as part of our selection procedure.
