Florida school counselors must have a master’s degree and be certified with the Florida Department of Education. To become a school counselor in Florida, you must hold either an advanced generalist or specialist degree in counseling.

You’ll also need to pass the state certification exam and complete supervised experience, which can be done on-the-job at your school district or through volunteer work with local organizations like Boys & Girls Club chapters or the YMCA.

Once you’re ready to apply for licensure as a school counselor in Florida, you’ll need to submit fingerprints for a background check along with other fees.
