Using video teaching materials on cultural management themes such as audience development, digitalization and project management, participants in international learning groups worked out marketing strategies for four cultural institutions in Bangkok, Berlin, Budapest and Lagos. The groups were individually mentored by academic teaching staff. The participants supported one another through peer learning and thus increased their learning success.

Upon successful completion of the MOOC Managing the Arts of the Goethe-Institut and the Leuphana University Lüneburg, participants obtained a certificate (5 ECT credits).

Forty percent of the mentored participants completed the course – a much higher figure than usual in MOOCs.

Through the group “MOOC Managing the Arts Alumni” at the alumni portal “Deutschland”, alumni of the course can stay in touch with one another.

Course Schedule 2016

1. Placing arts and cultural organizations in context
Global changes have impacts on local conditions for cultural work. What transformations do cultural organizations today face – and how could they use these challenges? Right at the beginning of the course, participants will discuss this internationally relevant question.

2. Markets, marketing and the changing notions of art and culture practices
Cultural institutions must increasingly position themselves in the light of market-based expectations. Can this work when art venues at the same time are supposed to be places for experiment, freedom and criticism? How these demands can be met while also addressing the transformation of social and cultural systems is the subject of this learning phase.

3. Marketing cultural projects and managing artistic processes
To guide artistic processes and simultaneously make creativity possible is the central challenge of cultural management. The focus of this phase of the course falls on the key qualification of communication and on strategies that can bring about successful cultural management.

4. Leveraging social capital for organizational growth
To remain competitive amidst the growing number of leisure activities, cultural managers must address culturally interested target groups. What strategies are helpful in order to gain a future audience? And who, apart from the audience, are other important stakeholders in cultural institutions and how can they be integrated into our work?

5. Co-creating and shaping digital brands
The brand development of an institution should take place through participation and dialogue; it should tell stories and speak to emotions. This brings with it risks as well as opportunities. Here the participants will reflect on how cultural participation is possible while at the same time exercising control over the trademark of a cultural institution.

6. Crafting sustainable artistic practices and programs
How can cultural institutions respond to current technical and social challenges? How can artistic activity be made sustainable? In the concluding phase of the course, participants develop strategies for real cultural institutions.

Graduate Certificate in Arts Management

The Graduate Certificate in Arts Management prepares leaders to make a difference in the arts and culture sector of their communities.

UO graduate students may take elective courses in the PPPM Arts & Cultural Leadership field of interest or elect to complete the 24-credit Graduate Certificate in Arts Management.

Students may complete the PPPM Graduate Certificate in Arts Management either as a stand-alone certificate or concurrently with any other University of Oregon master’s or doctoral degree. The certificate is designed to be completed over two years. However, on a case-by-case basis, students may be able to complete the certificate in one academic year. The Graduate Certificate in Arts Management commonly forms the concentration/field of interest (electives) portion of a graduate degree, so if you are completing a master’s degree, for example, you will usually be able to complete both the master’s and the certificate without adding extra time to your graduate degree program.

Students interested in careers in arts management are encouraged, in particular, to complete this certificate along with the PPPM Master of Nonprofit Management (MNM) degree program. The Graduate Certificate in Arts Management fulfills the field of interest portion of the PPPM MNM degree, the Master of Community and Regional Planning (MCRP) degree, or the Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree.

Completion of the Graduate Certificate in Arts Management requires 24 credits of coursework on the UO campus. This graduate certificate is complementary to the PPPM Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management, so it is possible for students to choose to complete both certificates. Whereas the Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management concentrates on the general nonprofit leadership functions of fundraising, financial management, and board governance, the Graduate Certificate in Arts Management provides a targeted curriculum in cultural administration, cultural policy, creative placemaking, the arts in society, and performing arts management. Students interested in Museum Studies are encouraged to also explore the Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies.


Required Courses

Of the 24 total credits needed for the certificate, four specific 4-credit courses are required (course numbers may change):

Elective Courses

The remaining eight (8) credits may be taken, with advisor approval, from an array of elective course offerings available within PPPM as well as within other academic units across campus.

Students without extensive professional experience will be strongly encouraged to complete a professional internship with an arts organization during their certificate program course of study. PPPM internship credit hours will be in addition to the 24 course credits required for completion of the Graduate Certificate in Arts Management.

Students who have not previously taken a fundraising course are strongly encouraged to enroll in PPPM 581 Fundraising for Nonprofit Organizations.

Admissions and Advising

The Graduate Certificate in Arts Management is designed to address the educational interests and needs of a wide array of UO graduate students:

  • Prospective and current students in the PPPM Master of Community and Regional Planning (MCRP), Master of Public Administration (MPA), or Master of Nonprofit Management (MNM) programs
  • Prospective and current UO master’s and doctoral students in affiliated academic fields such as Art History, Art, Anthropology, Music, Theatre, Dance, and Folklore
  • Early- and mid-career professionals who are seeking a one-year graduate program of study in Arts Management. Some students continue on to complete a full master’s degree (such as the MNM), and credits completed in this certificate can count toward that master’s degree.

UMass Amherst’s Arts Management Program is designed for working individuals who want to build their nonprofit management skills to advance or pivot their careers. We are a national leader in continuing professional education for aspiring and established arts professionals, with a broad range of courses to support your particular stage of professional development. The multi modal online coursework hones arts-based management techniques, innovative approaches to sector challenges, and socially current best practices for the workplace.

Our expert instructors lead interactive discussions and offer multimedia content that explores the current national and international trends in the arts field. Our online courses provide the unique opportunity to learn alongside seasoned and rising professionals embedded in national and international arts institutions, with space cultivated for robust conversation and shared work.

Though conducted online, our programs are anything but isolating. You are part of the greater community of arts professionals, building relationships with one another in the virtual classroom and accessing alumni and AES partners both during and after your time in the program. Course topics include marketing, programming, cultural equity, arts policy and advocacy, fundraising, financial management, strategic planning, program evaluation, and board development. Students can take courses a la carte, or elect to complete one of three Certificate Programs.

The Core and Professional Certificates are designed for emerging artists and arts managers, offering a mix of fundamentals and electives. Four and eight courses, respectively, these two Certificate options allow you to choose the depth and time you are able to devote to your program.

The Leadership Certificate is intended for established artists and managers, with two compulsory courses in Cultural Equity and Cultural Policy & Advocacy, and two electives – all from our selection of advanced courses. This is a competitive program, requiring a letter of interest to be submitted and approved prior to enrollment.

Course work is shaped around case studies that have you working with arts organizations in real-time to craft action plans they can implement. The work is based on the course, i.e. Marketing, Programming, Fundraising, etc. and gives you the opportunity to build your skill set and portfolio simultaneously. While the plan ultimately belongs to the case study organization, the knowledge and results can be leveraged to move you ahead in your current position or used in interviews for the position that you aspire to. There is nothing like real field experience and you will get that in our courses.

Admissions

Earn a Core Certificate in Arts Management or Leadership Certificate in Arts Management by successfully completing four online courses. Success is defined as completing all assignments well and participating meaningfully in class discussions. Complete eight classes for a Professional Certificate in Arts Management. All courses require students to identify a nonprofit organization as a case study to which they will apply course principals and assignments. Most students choose the organization for which they work or volunteer so the course can immediately pay off with improved management and programs.

Availability of financial aid varies depending on matriculation and course status. Please check with your program manager or advisor to determine your eligibility. Generally, if you are matriculated in a degree program and are enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits each semester, you may qualify for financial aid.
