The M.A. in Exceptional Child Education is designed to give general teachers tools and methods to help students with special needs in their classroom, and deepen the teaching skills and knowledge of special education teachers. Although this program does lead to an initial teaching certificate, it does offer an add-on Missouri teaching certificate in Early Childhood Special Education.

What to Expect

As an exceptional child education major, you’ll be able to customize your degree to your interests and needs with three emphasis areas: mild/moderate cross-categorical, autism, and early childhood special education. More specifically, you’ll have the opportunity to: 

  • Work with an advisor with expertise in your area of study. 
  • Conduct research relating to challenges you face in your own teaching. 
  • Earn additional Southeast certificates in Autism Spectrum Disorder or Missouri teaching certificate in Early Childhood Special Education.

Online M.Ed. in Exceptional Children and Youth

The University of Delaware’s online M.Ed. in Exceptional Children and Youth (Special Education) is designed to develop professional educators committed to careers that involve children, youth, and adults with disabilities. This program is appropriate for teachers with a teaching certificate in either general or special education who wish to develop advanced knowledge and skills. The program may also be appropriate for individuals who are not teachers but have other experience in the disability field and wish to pursue an advanced degree only. The online M.Ed. program does not lead to initial teacher certification.

For Delaware teachers, this program may be a path to a second certificate in special education as a Delaware Teacher of Exceptional Children Grades K-12. For teachers outside of Delaware, we encourage you to contact your state certification office to determine whether this program may lead to special education certification.

There are two concentrations in the online M.Ed.:

  • Elementary Special Education
  • Secondary Special Education

The online program for the Autism/Severe Disabilities concentration is currently on moratorium and is not accepting applications for admission. Technology plays a vital role in the Online M.Ed. in Exceptional Children in Youth program. Candidates will use technology to communicate with instructors, collaborate with peers, document school-based instruction, and submit assignments. Students are responsible for ensuring access to the following:

Course Description

Graduate Certificate in Special Education: Early Childhood Exceptional  Children Courses - Wilmington University

All major areas of exceptionality will be surveyed to provide undergraduate students with a first contact with the field of exceptionality from infancy through adolescence. The focus is on theory, empirical research, and interventions related to behavioral, emotional, and cognitive disorders.

This course explores theoretical perspectives and empirical data on disorders in children from infancy through adolescence. Students will be introduced to salient concepts, research, and controversies in the field of exceptionality. This course will enhance students’ understanding of various disorders (e.g., etiology, diagnosis, prognosis, current research) and related interventions.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the complexity of individual differences within the context of exceptional child psychology.
  2. Explain the major areas of developmental psychopathology including etiology, diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment.
  3. Analyze current research in the field of exceptional child psychology as it relates to real-world applications.
  4. Create an intervention plan that synthesizes research and practical applications within a real-world context.

The student is required to create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each prompt. Each thread must be at least 400 words and be written in current APA format. The thread must include at least 1 textbook, 1 research, and and 1 Bible citation. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 1 other classmate’s thread. The reply must be at least 300 words and be written in current APA format. The reply must include at least 1 textbook or research citation and 1 Bible citation (MLO A, B, C, E).

Homework Assignments (12)

The student will complete each assigned Mastery Training knowledge quiz. Each Mastery Training will cover content from the chapter readings (MLO A, B, C).

Quizzes: Video Activities (9)

The student will watch a video for each assigned chapter and complete a brief quiz at the end of each video (MLO A, B, C).

The student will submit a title page and reference page formatted according to current APA student standards. Both the title page and reference page must be submitted in one document. Formatting should comply with current APA standards. (MLO C).

The student will submit an annotated bibliography containing a 150-word annotation for each of 5 peer-reviewed journal articles. Formatting should comply with current APA standards. (MLO C).

Research Paper: Final Submission Assignment

The student will write a research paper examining a disorder/disability of interest or which he/she feels called to work. This assignment must be in current APA format, citing a minimum of 10 current (past 5 year), peer-reviewed, scholarly sources in addition to the textbook and the Bible (MLO A, B, C, D, E).

Each quiz covers the Learn material for each assigned Module: Week. Each quiz will be open-book/open-notes and have a 90-minute time limit to answer 24 multiple-choice and true/false questions. (MLO A, B, C, E).
