The class is taught by Professor Seyyed Hossein Nasr, one of the most influential scholars in Islamic studies today. He has served as professor of Islamic Studies at Tehran University in Iran and Harvard University in Massachusetts; he currently serves as Distinguished Professor of Islamic Studies at George Washington University in Washington D.C., where his lectures are available online for free viewing (you can find them here).

This course is ideal for individuals who want an introduction to the basic beliefs, practices, and history of Islam. It is free and open to the public. You will learn how Muslims believe it is possible to become closer to God through prayer, fasting and good deeds; how all Muslims follow the same sacred text, the Quran; about the five pillars of Islam: Faith, ritual worship (prayer), almsgiving (zakat), fasting during Ramadan and pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in a lifetime if one can afford it. You will also learn about Muhammad as both a prophet and political leader; consider some controversial issues in modern Muslim society such as women’s rights or religious freedom; gain insight into what it means to be a Muslim today by reading several first person accounts from Muslims around the world.

The goal is to help students develop a better understanding of what it means to be a Muslim, and how this religion differs from other religions such as Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism.
This course will not only teach students about foundational concepts within orthodox Islamic theology such as Allah’s oneness, prophethood, and scripture but also demonstrate how Muslims are commanded to live in many ways like their Jewish and Christian counterparts.
