Nagoya University was founded as the Nagoya Gakuin School in October 1871 by American missionaries Revs. Henry Plumer Jacobs (1823-1903) and his wife Harriet Otis Smith Jacobs (1827-1912) under the sponsorship of American businessman Zenjiro Yasuda (1820-1900). Classes were held on October 6th at a rented house at Jinguashiya 3rd street where now stands historic Meitetsu Bus Terminal building known as “Tobu Department Store” today because Tobu Railway Company took over this building from Meiji period onward for their headquarters purpose until present day.
