Best Contemporary Music Schools
Music is one of the most powerful gifts you can give to the world. Learning music can be difficult, but with a good school, it becomes easier and more enjoyable! Here are five of our favorite contemporary music schools.
Berklee College of Music
Berklee College of Music is a private institution founded in 1945 with an undergraduate enrollment of nearly 3,000 students and graduate enrollment of over 2,000. The school is located in Boston, Massachusetts and has been accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges since 1975.
Berklee was the first college to offer performance-based degrees rather than academic ones—a unique characteristic that sets it apart from other colleges across the country.
If you’re interested in pursuing your MBA at Berklee College of Music, consider applying for their 5-year full-time program (or dual degree option) for your master’s degree in business administration alongside your bachelor’s degree at one of their four schools: Business Administration & Management; Finance & Accounting; Management Information Systems; or Marketing & International Business Studies.
University of Washington, Seattle
If you’re looking for a school with a robust music program and instructors who are committed to the craft, look no further than the University of Washington. Located in Seattle, this school has an impressive list of faculty members and alumni that includes various Grammy award winners and nominees.
Besides its top-notch instruction, the University of Washington is well known for its world-class facilities. You’ll have access to one of the largest collections of audio equipment at any university in America along with studios designed to produce high quality sound recordings.
New York University
- The Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University is one of the best schools for contemporary music.
Students can apply for a number of scholarships and awards, including the Clive Davis Scholarship, which gives out $15,000 per student per year. They also receive mentoring from industry veterans such as John Sykes (Depeche Mode), David Gresham (A & R Worldwide) and Tommey Starland (Sony Music Nashville).
- The school has a state-of-the-art facility with six studios and two mixing rooms where students can practice mixing live or recorded tracks on industry standard equipment by day, after which they have access to all manner of recording equipment in their own apartments by night.
California Institute of the Arts (CalArts)
California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) is a school that offers a variety of programs, but most students graduate with degrees in either music or visual arts. It was founded in 1961 by Walt Disney and is located in Valencia, California.
The school has about 1550 students; notable alumni include Trent Reznor, Beck, Angela Davis and Joan Jett. The faculty includes Frank Zappa and John Baldessari as well as many other notable artists from all over the world who teach at CalArts. Tuition and fees for this school are $44100 per year which makes it one of the most expensive schools on our list
Yale is one of the best universities in the world, and for good reason. It’s widely regarded as a leader in contemporary music education and research, with an impressive number of graduates who have gone on to have successful careers in all aspects of music. In addition to having a strong reputation for its undergraduate program in music, Yale also offers graduate degrees that allow students to specialize further in their chosen area such as composition or performance while gaining valuable skills they can bring back into their field when they return home after graduation. This can be especially useful if you’re unsure exactly what direction you want to take your career because it will give you more time than most schools would provide before making such decisions about where your interests may lie within contemporary music studies itself–or elsewhere!
One thing worth mentioning about Yale University is its cost: it’s one of America’s most expensive colleges per year due largely due its location near New York City which means housing costs are higher than average as well (though there are ways around this). However, I believe this expense is worth it because not only does it provide access both academically but socially too; through interacting regularly with peers from different backgrounds who share similar interests makes learning easier than expected.”
